Peterson is the oldest of three children. He and his younger sister were abandoned by their mother. After their mother disappeared, Peterson was taken in by an aunt who did not send him to school. Instead, he was required to work and contribute financially to the household. Once discovered and reported, he was admitted to Tumaini Children's Home for care, protection, and the opportunity to attend school.
